Roman Road

Walking in the footsteps of the ancients.

Sunday Sept 8th, 2019
Carrion de los Condes to Calzadilla de la Cueza
17.5 km, 26,000 steps, walking day #18

The exciting part about today was walking along the Via Aquitana - the 2000 year old road built by the Romans.

I was imagining the original Romans walking in their togas, transporting goods with their horses and carts. They knew how to build roads. Straight for kilometers and kilometers.

Again we walked through fields of grain and sunflowers as far as they eye could see. To our north our walk was witnessed by a line of mountains, blue and purple in the distance.

It was mostly a quiet, contemplative walk, noticing the small things, like a small animal jumping away at the side of the road, finding a crane standing in the shade in a river that ran through one of the small villages on the route, and listening to distant bird calls.

I got into Calzadilla de la Cueza at about 1:00 pm. Lunch, laundry, resting and writing.  It's another of the tiny Camino towns, although it has two longitudinal streets and a number of cross streets. There is still enough esteem and pride here for people to maintain a beautiful home exterior. I will always love the detailed balcony railings and the flowers. Today I was treated to a multi-colour balcony. Most often they are monochrome.

As I was walking, I began thinking about those poor snails I stepped on the day after the rain. They deserved better.  I have composed a dirge in their honor.
It is to be sung to the tune of  "This Little Light of Mine". Also best if accompanied by an harmonica and a small choir of people humming:

Those po' little escargot
They ain't gonna go no mo'
Those four little escargot
They ain't gonna go no mo'

They were stretched out on the track
They took an unfortunate tack
There was no time to turn back
Then the pilgrim's shoe went crack

Those po' little escargot
They ain't gonna go no mo'
Those four little escargot
They ain't gonna go
                                     no
                                          mo'......
